Hi there! Welcome!
My name is Katie Pumphrey. I'm an artist and open water swimmer - looking to embark on my biggest swimming challenge yet- the English Channel.
I'm 27 years old and live in Baltimore, Maryland with my amazing fiancé, Joe and our dog, Monty. I grew up in Frederick, MD with two older brothers and an older sister. Above all other things I've learned from my siblings, I've learned that being a wimp is not an option.
I've been swimming competitively since I was five years old. For most of my pool swimming career, I swam with Monococy Aquatic Club. I also swam for my high school, where I learned that waking up before sunrise to swim means two breakfasts! (I heart 2nd breakfast!)
I graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2009, with a Bachelors of Fine Art. I am a full time working artist- primarily large scale oil paintings or charcoal drawings. My two worlds of art & swimming work beautifully together. I always feel very lucky to have two big passions. When I chose to study art rather than swim collegiately made me look at swimming in a new way, which is how I got into open water swimming.
I have also been a swim coach for the past 10 years! Currently, I am the proud Head Coach of a summer leage team here in Baltimore- the big bad, Bolton Hill Barracudas! I also work with an awesome group of adults each summer- the Bolton Hill Masters team. Like I said, when I'm not in the water, I'm usually on deck.
I believe strongly that swimming is an important life skill and a wonderful life long sport! Open water swimming has made me fall in love with the sport in a new way. I enjoy every piece of it.
So, that's pretty much me in a few paragraphs...I'm excited for this adventure as I train towards my Channel swim in 2015! Woohoo!
